Before Christmas, I told you about the excellent gift shop at the Goma so today I’m going to tell you about their current exhibition. This exhibition I can confidently say is a crowd pleaser. You can take your partner who hates art and thinks most of it could be made by a 3 year old to this show. I’m sure all of us have a person in our lives that could care less about art and/or galleries as a whole. This show will engage anyone from young and old easily and I assure you will entertain.
So what is the jist of this show i’m ranting and raving about? There are over a 100 pieces of art from Asia, the pacific and Australia. The themes are very broad ranging from music and technology to family and culture. Essentially its a little bit of this and a little bit of that. This is by no means an in depth review which could end up being an essay but just to highlight what I think really stands out and what many people will enjoy.
Zhu Weibing and Ji Wenyu’s “People holding flowers” is the iconic piece used by GoMA for the majority of the advertisements for this exhibition. It is really fun to look at , as it isn’t really an image or a painting. Its a large type of diorama with little men holding beautiful pink fuzzy flowers. It takes up a very large space and is very engaging. I wish you could just buy a little man holding a flower to take home. But you can’t, but you can stare at it and marvel as its beauty. Its on the ground floor and you can see it when you walk by the rooms from the hallway.
Another stand out work is Kohei Nawa’s “PixCell – Elk#2.” It is a giant stuffed Elf covered in glass bubbles. It is set up in a white room and really a stunning piece.
Well there are way too many amazing pieces to highlight, you’ll have to go and see it for yourself. It will be in Brisbane till February 2010, so pick up the guide and check it out.
